Darrio’s Bio

Darrio Phillips originates from Ohio, USA. He came to Australia in the early 1980’s where he was one of the original Hip-hop dancers in Australia; dancing on countless TV programs, promotions, tours and shows.

Today, his name is synonymous with Hip Hop dance having educated several generations of Sydney students and bringing Hip-hop dance into the Catholic & State Education departments’ curriculum as an acceptable style of dance for Sport & PE.

Always at the forefront stylistically Darrio has maintained a quality and a forward thinking attitude towards his art at all times. In recent years he discovered KRUMP dance which stirred in him the same passion that streetdance did in the 1970’s. So Darrio took on this new style of dance and added it to his already large repertoire and took it on the road.

This new style has brought him into contact with many community organizations such as ice.org.au and other bodies conducting ground breaking work in disadvantaged communities. He has also had the privilege of being the adjudicator at the Sydney Eisteddfod, the Southern Hemispheres largest competition of its kind, where Hip Hop dance was included for the first time in 2007. This is a tribute to Hip Hop dances new standing in the dance community.

Darrio was invited to participate at the 2008 Sydney Biennale where he and his friends took the stage at the Museum of Contemporary Art, celebrating the new partnership between high art and street art. He has also enjoyed working with reputable organizations such as NAISDA and Tasdance.

Looking forward to continuing all these great achievements in 2009 and keeping the movement fresh and alive and always creating, Darrio continues to teach Australias’ willing dancers and working in partnership with the KRUMP and Hip Hop communities to take this art higher and lettin’ it “ do what it’s gonna do”.
